Breast-feeding Women Raise Their Voices Against Their Husbands

Commissioner District: Siriel Mchembe

Tanzania men competing for breast milk with children is no longer news. TheCitizen reports.

Breast-feeding women in the district have sought the help of Siriel Mchembe, District Commissioner to make their voices heard as they cause a shortage of milk for children.

This special request was made early this week during an event to celebrate breastfeeding week which was held at Mkata.

Siriel Mchembe, an expert on Social Protection and Women's entrepreneurship and Specialist on financial, digital Inclusion on Women's Economic Empowerment, has explained that it derives from a misunderstood assumption that breast milk improves sexual performance which has left children in some areas severely underweight.

"I advise those men who are sucking their breastfeeding wives' breasts to stop with immediate effect, because it causes malnutrition since children don’t get enough milk, please stop this habit,” she said.
